Upcoming LIGHT morning study

Hi everyone,

After our discussion of Counterfeit Gods is over, beginning on September 19th, men from the LIGHT class will take turns facilitating a study of the Gospel of John. This will be a long-term study, with at least two mornings devoted to each chapter. Please consider prayerfully reading the Gospel of John in your own time as preparation for this season of fellowship and immersion in God's Word together.

Questions about idols.

This Sunday we will begin our study of "Counterfeit Gods" by Tim Keller. Bruce Adams will lead and has forwarded the following interesting questions to help us identify our idols:

What is an idol? Give some examples of good things in life that can become idols.
Idols capture our imagination, and we can locate them by looking at our daydreams. What do you daydream about? What do you enjoy imagining?
Idols give us a sense of being in control, and we can locate them by looking at our nightmares. What do you fear the most?
We can also locate idols by looking at our most unyielding emotions. What makes you uncontrollably angry, anxious, or despondent?

Counterfeit Gods

LIGHT MC will be using Tim Keller's book, "Counterfeit Gods" in a study of idolatry and its influence on our heart's response to Jesus answer to the question, "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment?"

Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' "

Ecclesiastes study

Don't miss the remaining few lessons about Ecclesiastes, lead by Patrick Donohue. It has been a very encouraging study so far, and there are only a couple more weeks of it before we transition to the next series, which will be Connecting Community, and Missional Communities, respectively.

Also, this is Chapelgate's month for volunteering with Howard County Christian Services, so please consider volunteering your time. A group helped beautify the facilities this past Saturday, and I hear it looks great!

Nov 9 - hearing from Eileen Shields about ministry opportunities at Christian Services of Howard County.
Nov 16 through Nov 30, a study with Deacon Kenneth Derrenbacher of "Living Beyond Myself," a focus on Christian service and ministry.

Sugarloaf Mountain Hike

LIGHT's next group event is a hike at Sugarloaf Mountain.

When: Sunday, November 2nd right after church (sometime between 11:30 and noon). We plan to return around 4:30pm

Bring your family, your friends, and a bag lunch to eat at the church before we head off.

Uploading pictures!

I've gone ahead and created a Flickr account for LIGHT.

There are a couple ways I would recommend to upload pictures to Flickr. The first is to visit www.flickr.com and log in to the LIGHT photo album. The login information is:

email: cpclight@ymail.com
password: chapelgate

The other way to upload pictures, which is a little easier, is to attach the pictures to an email addressed to: done87design@photos.flickr.com

As soon as you send the email, the pictures will automatically be uploaded to our photo album.

I've gone ahead and (without permission, heh heh heh) uploaded a picture of our very own Bruce and Janet Adams, for your viewing pleasure and for testing purposes :)

Welcome to the LIGHT blog!

What is the LIGHT blog? More than anything, this blog will be a way for you to stay informed of upcoming events hosted by the LIGHT community.

We also see this as a supplementary facet of the LIGHT class. Our leaders/teachers have the ability to post new posts, and if you have a Google or Blogspot account, you can log in and post comments on posts. This will be a fun way to share comments about each week's Sunday morning group meeting. Keep your eyes peeled for follow-up tidbits from our teachers each week.

Another thing you can do is upload pictures that you've taken during group events. As soon as I can figure out a simple way to do this, I will post instructions!

One thing this blog is not intended to be is a forum for prayer requests. Please continue to use the existing channels available to you for sharing your prayer requests with each other.

NCR Trail Bike Ride

LIGHT's first group event was held on October 4th, 2008. Nineteen of us got out our bikes and rode (at various paces!) nearly 22 miles from Ashland to White Hall on the NCR Trail, stopping on the way back at Monkton for food and fellowship. Plenty of pictures were taken of this beautiful time together enjoying God's creation.
